Preserving Oswego’s History for the Future

The Heritage Foundation of Oswego County promotes preservation by nominating historic buildings, sites, and districts for national, regional, and local recognition as worthy of protection, rehabilitation, and use as part of the county’s valuable and unique assets. We work with local government to encourage standards and regulations that promote preservation. We meet with representatives in local government and, through public education forums and petitions, advocate for policies that protect and promote historic preservation. We promote preservation through projects such as tours of downtown living spaces in preserved and repurposed historic sites and structures, plaques marking homes in historic districts, and workshops on the economic benefits of preservation to homeowners and business owners.

Our county’s unique maritime, commercial, and military history makes preserving Oswego’s buildings and sites all the more vital to include in the story of our state and nation Preservation keeps those stories alive, encouraging people to move to as well as visit Oswego.

We have the honor of collaborating with other area groups such as PACNY --Preservation Association of Central New York, ORA (Oswego Renaissance Association), and Save Oswego’s Historic Sites. We have an ongoing working relationship with the New York State Parks and Recreation Historic Preservation office and The Preservation League of New York State.
